National Transportation Safety Board Wants Sleep Apnea Screening for Professional Drivers

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has renewed its campaign to broaden the use of sleep disorder screening across all modes of transportation - air, rail, marine, and trucking - as part of long-term effort to significantly reduce the negative effects of fatigue.

A landmark conference, co-sponsored by the American Trucking Association (ATA), the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA) taking place in Baltimore, MD on May 12th, was the venue for the NTSB and the FMCSA to communicate their position to members of the transportation and sleep medicine communities.

Christopher Hart, NTSB's vice chairman noted that "all modes [of transportation] begin identifying people with high risk for sleep disorders and guide them to medical treatment" and Anne Ferro, FMCSA's administrator, stated that her agency is heightening its focus on Sleep Apnea.

Mary Parrish, Fusion Sleep's VP of Transportation Safety was the only representative of the sleep medicine community quoted in this article by FleetOwner.
